Breaking (also known as B-Boying & B-Girling) originated in New York during the late 1960's and early 70's, incorporating various moves from material arts, gymnastics, and the other dance styles; tap dancing being one of them. The biggest inspiration came from a funk and soul artist who is credited as the "father of funk" James Brown. 

Like Hip Hop culture (dj, emcee, breaking, graffiti) breaking has its own foundation the original four movements are toprock - footwork - freezes & power moves. What once was created by African American and Latino youths in the late 60's and early 70's in the streets of New York can now be seen everywhere around the world including its most recent announcement the Olympic Games in 2024.
